Asakusa(Taitō) is the standard tourism spot in Tokyo where almost all of the In-bound tourists to Tokyo may visit as one of their destination. This can be said that it is a convenient tourism spot, because you can feel good–old atmosphere of Tokyo lower town and traditional temples and shrines, as well as the contemporary Japanese architecture here effectively, since Tokyo Skytree is located in neighborhood. “Naka-Mise-Dohri”, street from “Kaminari-Mon” (Thunder Gate) to “Senso-Ji” temple is a good shopping street for souvenirs. Unique designed building stands across the street of “Kaminari-Mon” (Thunder Gate) is tourist information center, designed by Kego Kuma, who is the designer of New National Stadium. Multi-language service concierge staff are stationed at the counter of 1F of this building, so you can get various tourist information there. And also you can ask volunteer town guide service there, and you can enjoy good view of “Kaminari-Mon” (Thunder gate) through “Naka-Mise” shopping street, and “Senso-Ji” temple from the deck of its 8F.

This is the world tallest free standing transmission tower, established in 2012 as the successor of Tokyo Tower. It is 634m high, which is twice as tall as Tokyo Tower. It has two observation decks on 350m, and 450m high, so you can enjoy gorgeous town view of Tokyo in 360 degrees. On its grand floor, there is “Tokyo Sora Machi” which is shopping and food shops space with many of souvenir shops, food shops lined up, and also “Sumida Aquarium” is built together. It is only one station of train ride by Tokyo Skytree line from Asakusa Station. Although it looks close from Asakusa area because of its height, please be noted that it is more than 2km in distance, so it takes 20 minutes or more on foot. This tower applies anti-earthquake structure called “Shin-Bashira” (core post) which is same technology as that had been used for Five Story Pagodas of Japanese traditional Temples.

In Asuka-Era (YR 628), one day two local fishermen brothers brought back a Buddhism statue which was caught in fishing net when their fishing was poor, and inquire about it of an intelligent person in town, then it was appraised as Holy Bodhisattva statue. So they enshrined it, and they got big catches after that. The temple where the statue is enshrined is this “Senso-Ji” temple. And the three men, the brothers and the intelligent person, are enshrined in “Asakusa Jinjya” shrine, which is located next to “Senso-Ji” Temple. As shown in this story, in old times, Japanese shrine and Buddhism temple existed at same place as a united one. This is one of the representative holdover place of such tradition. The famous “Sanjya Matsuri” (Festival of three deities), is the festival of this three men enshrined in “Asakusa Jinjya” shrine. (“Sanjya” means three deities)

This “Kaminari-Mon” (Thunder Gate) is the place where everyone who visit Asakusa may visit. This gate hanging big red lantern, is the standard of the standard Tokyo tourism spots which is shown on every guide books. There are enshrined statues of “Fuh-Jin / Rai-Jin” (deity of Wind and Thunder) on each side of the gate, so it is also called as “Fuh / Rai Jin Mon” The big red lantern hanged on the center of the gate was donated by Mr. Kounosuke Matsushita, who is the founder of Panasonic.

This 250m long street from “Kaminari Mon” through “Houzou Mon” is the shopping street, where various souvenir shops, food shops are lined up on both sides. You can find Kimonos, traditional crafts, and other Japanese original goods for souvenir, and also can enjoy local foods such as rice crackers, sweet bun, or other local sweets. Besides the main street, there are side paths on both side where many of shops are lined up, and crossing streets are thriving as shopping district as well.

You can find “Hoppy Dohri” street, when you turn left at the front of “Senso-Ji” temple, and proceed along “Den-Po-Dohri” street, that is a bars and pubs district. Many shops are lined up along the street, with setting tables on the street, and you can enjoy alcohol drinks and side dishes by reasonable price under open air atmosphere. Many of shops open from afternoon, so this area is thriving also by foreign tourists.
