Shibuya large crossing

Shibuya large crossing

It is so called “Scramble” system intersection, which had first been installed in US or Canada in 1960’s, but now this Shibuya large crossing might be noted as the most famous “Scramble” intersection in the world. There are more than 3,000 people across the intersection in just one blue-light period in the most. This huge number of crossing people and how they across it quickly without bumping against each other, make people from foreign counties surprised, and it becomes to be focused as a symbolic landscape of metropolis Tokyo. You can find a lot of foreign tourists observing this landscape at large window of concourse between Keio Inokashira Line and JR, or window seats of Starbucks Coffee located at north of the crossing, which is the position just looking down it.

Meiji Shrine

This shrine was established in 1920, to enshrine Meiji emperor and empress. It is the shrine having largest number of worship-visitor in Japan, there are almost 3 million worshipers visiting here just during the 1st 3 days of January. Omotesandoh

Omotesandoh

“Omotesandoh” originally means the main approach way to shrines, so there are lots of “Omotesandoh” street all over the country where shrines are there. But, if you say just “Omotesandoh”, it normally means this approach way to Meiji Shrine in Harajuku. There are large stone lanterns on both side of street at “Jinguh Mae” intersection, and “Omotesandoh” intersection, which show that this is main approach way to the shrine. So you can feel such historical story when you find them. This street lined with Zelkova, has a lot of famous brand shops along both sides, and is bustling by domestic and foreign tourists. Kiddy Land, which is famous as “Hello Kitty” for foreign people, and also Oriental Bazar where you can find Japanese traditional souvenirs, are standing along this street. They are always busy by foreign tourists. “Omotesandoh Hills”, which is new shopping facility opened on 2006, was reconstructed in replacement of 80 years old big apartment building. This facility is designed by Tadao Andoh, who is a Japanese architect quite famous by his concrete building. It became a new landmark of this area now. This Zelkova lined street is beautifully illuminated during Christmastime, so it becomes a good night view spot then. In addition, Ota Memorial Museum of Art, which is famous by “Ukiyoe”, wood block print, is located at entering a little from the halfway of this street. It is also a popular spot for inbound tourists.

Cyu-Ken Hachi-Koh

Cyu-Ken Hachi-Koh

This can be said as the symbol of Shibuya Station, “Cyu-Ken Hachi-Koh”, a statue of the faithful dog. This statue was founded in 1934, for a memory of a faithful dog (Akita dog), which had been waiting his dead owner’s homecoming here for 10 years and finally dead. This story became the Hollywood movie starring by famous actor, Richard Gere (Hachi; A dog’s Tale), so its popularity is high in foreign people as well. “In front of Hachi-Koh statue”, is the standard meeting point at Shibuya, and it was so famous and crowded by meeting people that you must appoint exact location finely such as “nose side of Hachi-Koh”, or “Tail side of Hachi-Koh”, or you cannot meet each other. (It becomes a laughing tale because of mobile phone now, though!)
