Chiyoda-ku is located at almost center of Tokyo city central area, and The Imperial Palace is at its center, and occupies 15% of its total area. There are the Diet Building and Kasumigaseki (government office district) in its south, and Tokyo Station and Marunouchi or Ohtemachi, the main business district of Japan in its east, so this area can be called not only the center of Tokyo, but also that of Japan.

The Imperial Palace, “Nijyu-Bashi” bridge, and the East Garden

The Imperial Palace is former Edo Castle area. After the Meiji restoration in 1868, the Emperor moved here from Kyoto, and stay here for his house and palace instead of Shogun Tokugawa. “Nijyu-Bashi” bridge is formally indicate the iron bridge inside of the Palace main gate, but in generally, including the stone bridge connecting to the Palace Plaza, these two bridges have been called as “Nijyu-Bashi” collectively. The main gate of the Palace is usually closed, and is opened only when general congratulatory palace visit is held in New Year or birthday of the Emperor, and people can across these bridges then. A part of The Imperial Palace, where the donjon of Edo Castle existed, is called “Higashi-Gyoen” (the East Garden), and has been maintained as palace’s garden. This area is opened for public with free of charge, so it is a popular tourism spot also for inbound tourists.

This Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building was constructed on 1914, at the location of facing to the Imperial Palace, as the face of Tokyo, designed by Kingo Tatuno, who had studied for world famous British architect, Josiah Conder. This is made of red bricks, from which we can feel its history and dignity. It is designated as important cultural property. It was partially damaged by Tokyo air raid of World War II, but its restoration had been progressed, and finally completed in October, 2012, with reproducing its original shape of 100 years ago faithfully. North and South octagon dome of this building have historical interior on its sealing. When you look up the sealing from its inside, you can see fantastic wall surface decoration reliefs. Most of them were the original ones just replaced there with 100 years history. Tokyo Station Hotel located in this station building is the only one hotel exists inside of important cultural property. You can stay there under European classic atmosphere, and with feeling over 100years’ history of Tokyo station.

“Chidori-ga-fuchi” is the area of north-west part of The Imperial Palace. This area is famous and popular for most of Japanese as the spot of Cherry blossom in spring time. The view of cherry flowers in full bloom facing to moat is overwhelming. You can also enjoy this scenery from the surface of water of the moat by boating. There is “Nihon Budoh Kan” (Japanese martial arts gymnasium) at its north-end, which was the main stadium of JUDO in 1964 Tokyo Olympic game. It is now widely used not only for martial arts, but also for concerts, or other events. It is also famous as the place where The BEATLES’ first concert in Japan was held.

It became world famous as “OTAKU” town, the dispatch place of sub-culture, this Akihabara area now, however, it originally started as black market after the World War II, and many of junk shops were concentrated. And such shops’ area had been developed and became famous as big electric appliance stores district. In late 1990’s through 2000, there were shops dealing animation goods or games increased here, and from YR 2005 or so, it became popular as the dispatch place of “OTAKU” culture. Also, in the same year, the AKB 48 Theater was established, and lady idle group AKB 48 gained popularity as the idle you can go to meet, which accelerated getting public attention for this area. There are lots of so called “Maid Café”, where girls with maid costume attend customers, this area becomes a mecca of “OTAKU” culture people, who are trying to get Anime goods, or figures. And there are many of foreign tourists as well, who wants to touch with such “OTAKU” culture. When you go through the busy quarter, at the south-end of this area, you can find “Manseibashi” bridge. There is new commercial facility named “mAAch ecute”, constructed on the trace of former “Manseibashi” Station, which was old historical red brick made station, originally constructed in 1912. The part of platform or stairways of 100 years ago still remain as their original shape. So, you can feel old historical atmosphere here, apart from the hustle and bustle of Akihabara busy district. It is tasteful to spend relaxing time at the terrace of this facility, looking down Kanda River side landscape.
